Plans have been changed overnight. At 1am we lost power and did not think to much about it till we came back from our 6am viewing and at first they said it was off in all of Stewart and Hyder and would be turned on by noon.
We decided to go for a ride on the main road into the towns and found out that an electric pole has fallen into the river. The wires were still connected but the water was really getting high. Further up the road they were dumping in big rocks into the water on the side of the road. The roads are dikes and the high water was eroding the banks. The 90+ degree temperatures have melted the glaciers all around and the snow on top of the mountains. The water is rising and the a man on the road directing traffic said they were worried about the rising water flooding the town of Stewart. You drive from Stewart to Hyder. There are no other ways in our out of the town. Sooooo, we decided to leave immediately and drove to Terrance, BC and camp. We will probably drive to Prince Rupert, but we are happy were we are with wifi we can use. We also have TV, good or bad.
If everything is ok in Hyder on Sunday we will probably go back up there. The photographer from National Geographics is to be there this week or next. There are some huge cameras being used by many photographers. A friend Kim, who teaches math at a junior college in San Diego has I think three cameras with him. Kim has been up there many years. Nancy who is a professional photographer, has 2 huge cameras. Most of the professional photographers go up every year.
I am reading another book by Edward Abbey, "Desert Solitaire" A Season in the Wilderness. "It is a celebration of the beauty of living in a harsh and hostile land". The author worked as a Ranger in Utah's Arches National Park.
Hope you enjoy the pictures as much as I enjoyed taking them. Gene has some wonderful videos of everything.
