McLeese Lake
Today was pick-a-road day. We decided to go to Horsefly today but we ended up in Likely and Cedar Point, which was good. Likely is on the historic Cariboo Gold Rush Trail, that we have been following. In 1859 when gold was discovered in the area, the sudden influx of miners and ensuing merchants gave rise to the rough edged gold rush boom towns of Quesnel Forks, Cedar City and Keithley Creek with populations in the thousands. Today it is in the hundreds. Likely was named after John Likely a popular prospector who was instrumental in starting the gold rush in Cedar Creek in 1921.
We also saw the Bullion Pit Mine, dating from 1894 to 1941, which was a key factor in the development of Likely. It was the largest hydraulic mine operating in North America.
Gene saw a sign to fish research station which was run by the University of BC. A student came out and told us about the work they do with salmon,to much to get into, and we commented on the beautiful working conditions he has.
We did go to a museum in Cedar Point and got a personal tour with a woman who has lived in the area since 1953. Her father was prospector and her mother was a teacher in Likely. They met and the rest is history as they say. She said they have lots of nuggets to show for it. Pat lives on 20 acre on the family place and helps run the museum.
We only saw deer today.
