Barkersville, BC

Barkersville, BC

Billy Barker’s discovery of gold on Williams Creek in 1862 triggered a stampede of thousands of people from all over the world. Over the next eight years, these adventurers travelled the Cariboo Wagon Road, referred to as the Eighth Wonder of the World, and converged on Barkerville and the gold fields. It’s a unique streetscape 1 ½ miles long of over 125 heritage buildings. Period room display what is was like to live in the time period. People are walking around in period costume in street theatre shows and the museums were remarkable. There were stagecoach rides, a mining demonstration, old fashion candies and supplies in the stores, gold panning and restaurants in the old buildings. The miners’ houses look like the owner just walked away. The Chinatown section has restaurants and shops. The school bell rang and boys and girls (men & women) had to get into separate lines with the teacher giving instructions as to how all should behave…very civil. Boys sit on one side of the room and the girls on the other.
We have been to many recreated town sites but this one takes the cake. I guess it was the wilderness that made it so dramatic. Hope the pictures do it justice. It was a great day and we came home exhausted.
The only animal we saw today was a BC ground squirrel.
