Hyder Alaska

Hyder Alaska
The first day at the Fish Creek Platform we saw 2 grizzle bears. There is a lot of fish in the creek this year so we are seeing many more bears this year. The past two days has not brought the black bears out. We have seen eagles but they haven’t come down for the fish. The bears have so much salmon that they are now just eating the skin, roe and head. The salmon are huge. When I can send pictures you will see the bear getting a salmon at least 2 feet long.
Today we got up at 6am to go see the bears. Rangers have also seen 2 wolves down at the creek, but not this morning. We saw 3 bear this morning and then it started to rain so we went home to take care of some business. It has since rained all day. It is a steady light rain without wind or thunder. I made a stew and have been reading another book that one of the fellow travelers gave me. It’s by Tony Hillerman, “The Sinister Pig”. I can’t put it down. It is a detective story that takes place on an Indian Reservation and involves the FBI.
Gene worked on his videos he has taken. It is so relaxing to sit and listen to music with the steady patter of rain coming down.
The town of Hyder does not have police. There is no crime and if anything happens “they take care of it themselves”. The streets are dirt. There aren’t any sewers so the rain just puddles up in driveways and low areas. The people are very friendly.
We have eaten at the bus again with a couple from Australia. It is actually a school bus on wheels and the owner has set up a kitchen in it to cook. You can sit out front or in the building in back. When we were sitting outside a car drove by and asked if they could take our picture. The owner’s husband goes out fishing in the morning and that is what she cooks for the day. Crab, halibut, and chowder are great along with the salmon. I am in heaven.
I am writing all this because when I can, I will down load only pictures. Black bears and grizzly are what we have seen so far along with many different birds.
We will be here until next Tuesday.
