El Paso, 9/30

Well I guess it is time to go home. We have had a great week with Terin, Andrew and the Brailynn and with Marci, Gene and Jeff. We wined and dined and watched football. I had to put up with the Steelers loss and Cowboys win, but it was fun sharing. Tomorrow we will be on the road and take 3 days to get home stopping at some interesting places. We are looking forward to seeing Marci & Gene's new house, and our family and friends. It has been a great trip. We have gone over 13,000 miles and have had a wonderful time. Until we get on the road again...I am signing off.

El Paso

We arrived in El Paso on Wednesday and came full circle in 3 months. Enjoy seeing the family. Marci & Gene left on Friday and Jeff arrived just before they left. Having a great time with our beautiful great granddaughter. I will send pictures later. To busy to take pictures. We will probably be home a week from tomorrow. Looking forward to see the rest of family and friends.

Las Vegas

After a down day on Sunday because of 105 degree day we decided to do a little touring. The first place was Hoover Dam which was started in 1931 and the last concrete was poured in 1935. I have seen TV shows on this but I never realized what challenges of the remote location and some of the harshest working conditions presented. Six companies completed the project two years ahead of schedule and well under the budget. A new magnificent bridge is being built to divert traffic from the Dam bridge. After touring the Dam we went out for a Cheap steak dinner and then went downtown to see the heart of Vegas. Because Marci, Jeff and Steve had been there they recommended us go to the Bellagio hotel to see the water show. The waters are dancing to music. It was as spectacular as they mentioned. We then walked the strip.

Death Valley

Death Valley

Saturday, Pahrump NV

Silly as it may seem, I wanted to go deep into the desert. Our first stop was Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge where we view the famous Pup Fish. The tiny pup fish are on the endangered species list. There are thirty seeps and springs on the refuge that bring "fossil" water to the surface. The water entered the groundwater entered the system thousands of years ago. It is part of the Mojave Desert and hot, 104 degrees. We got pictures of the fish, lizard and the water hole that is spewing the cool water in the hot desert. We also have pictures of coyote and bobcat scat. Lucky us!
Our next stop was Death Valley. I don't know how many of you out there remember the televising show, Death Valley Days, sponsored by 20 mule team Borax, but we do. Death Valley is where they mined the Borax and it is a land of great extremes. Extremes in temperature, which was 115 degrees yesterday and did not cool off even when the sun went down. At 7pm is went down to 111. The extremes in elevation with mountains over 12,000 ft and the valley at -282 ft. below sea level. There are over 1,000 native plant species, (desert holly) and harbor fish, snails and other aquatic animals found nowhere else. We would have loved to hike but the heat was debilitating.
The area alternates mountains and valleys and is called the Basin & Range geologically. The earths crust has been uplifted, stretched and cracked to form fault lines that trend north to south. There is tilting and rotating of two blocks between faults the create the Badwater Basin , the lowest part of the valley.
We intend to go back when it is cooler.

Pahrump, NV

Going through the Mojave Desert to Parhump. One Hundred years ago Paiute Indian's harvested pine nuts and seeds, and hunted wild game from Spring Mountain. The name Pah (means water) and Rump ( is rock) in the Paiute language. It is truly an Oasis in the desert. In 1954, an asphalt road was completed over the mountains to Las Vegas and then electricity arrived in 1963 with telephone service 2 years later. It is now a town of about 48,000. More in the winter when the snow bunnies come down from the north.
I went to the emergency room in town. The last place put me in a sling and this doctor said not to use it. My shoulder could freeze up if I don't move it. They could not give me a shot of cortisone and have me on ibuprofen. I just need relief.
Tomorrow we will go to Death Valley National Monument then on to Las Vegas on Sunday. Then heading home with a stop to see the newest member of the family in El Paso.
