San Francisco, 9/2
What is happening? It is getting hot here. Time to move on.
Yesterday we took a tour of San Francisco on a double decker bus. We covered Nob Hill, China Town, Lombard St.(Crooked zig zag St, North Beach, etc. The playground where Joe DiMaggio started playing baseball as a kid. The comedy club where Robin Williams got started and the many places that movies were filmed were pointed out. I don't remember most of the information we heard...there was to much.
Coit Tower is the round tower at the top of Telegraph hill. It was built during the depression along with the Golden Gate Bridge. The tale triangular building is the Trans American Tower.
Going back to Pier 39 we saw the sea lions that have made it a home next to the pier. After the earth quake in 1987 the sea lions made the pier their home and no type of coaxing would make them move, so they put in many floats for them so they would stay off the main piers or docks. The smell...I wish I could send you a sample...but we were mesmerized by their antics, like playing what we called king of the float, knocking one another off and watched them crawl over each other and the vocals were amusing and loud. Gene has it on video.
Then we got on a cable car and viewed the city from there. The hills are steep and the cable cars stop in the middle of the streets where it is level. They have to change the breaks every three days. The hill sides are the real SF and the flat lands are fill areas.
There is also a view of Angel Island Immigration Station. Leading up to WWII 1 million immigrants were detained on the island for months, sometimes years, trying to get into the U.S. The immigrants were given humiliating exams and had poor crowded living conditions. It is nearly 70 years since the "Ellis Island of the West" was shut down.
The Stinken Rose is an all garlic restaurant even the ice cream. Tour guide said you smell of garlic for days, but it was good.
That is what we ate at the restaurant, a combination of about 9 different unique foods.
