July 13 & 14
July 13 & 14
We stopped to tour Dawson City. It still has all dirt roads and wooden sidewalks. Very interesting history and we’ve completed the voyage of the miners. We saw where they came in Skagway, the trails they had to climb and the weather they had to endure. It seems like an impossible task. It was easy for us in the rv.
We pulled over for the night on the side of the road. Neither of us could sleep so at 11:30 we decided to move further down the road. About 1 am we decided to pull in at another rest stop and slept till 7am. Then got back on the road again.
On the drive to Whitehorse we saw 3 black bears and ptarmigan. Going 65 mph down a road with a truck pulling a fifth wheel makes it hard to stop fast. So… no pictures of the animals.
In Whitehorse we went to the dam and to see the fish ladder they had built when they built the dam. Unfortunately the salmon were not running. They usually don’t get to Whitehorse until August. Last year they only had 400 Chinook salmon make it back. As of July 11 they have stopped all fishing along the root of the salmon in hopes of the population increasing. The salmon trail 2,000 miles to get back to their birthplace.
We are camping at Pioneer cg in Whitehorse. After this blog we will be staying in provincial campgrounds or in pull outs on the road for a week. Hope all is well with everyone. This is a fantastic experience...
