Castle Rock, WA

Today was our drive to Mt. St. Helens. What an awesome scene. You see pictures of the devastation and changes to the environment but to still be able to see this 29yrs after the fact make you realize the massive energy and force of the volcano. The valley floor of the Toutle River has risen from the 60 to 600 feet of from the landslide & volcanic ash. The eruption blew done 220 sq. miles of forest and disrupted navigation as far as the Columbia River. You can still see the fallen trees with the trees broken and looking like large toothpicks that are clustered together. Even 29yrs later the landscape in some areas are barren. We could see Mt. St. Helens briefly between the clouds. There is still activity going on there. In pictures you can see smoke rising from the caldera. There were no fires because of the lack of oxygen.
