Sept 17,18

Sept 17, 18

The day was spent cleaning and organizing our rv and talking to neighbors. It is so nice here at Grand View Bend we decided to stay another day.
We went to the laundry Thursday morning and then went to the communities of Lagrange and Shipshewana, which are Mennonite and Amish towns. The Amish ride bicycles or drive horse and buggies and woman wear long dresses and wear head coverings. The Mennonite’s are not as strict and will drive cars. The wood furniture is fantastic along with the quilts they make. Stopped into a blacksmith shop and met the owner James Rubley who makes beautiful custom and historic knives out of metal files. He teaches blacksmithing and was a geologist. Found some 210myo large shark tooth pieces that we got for the grandkids. We then went to the Yoder’s Cheese & Meat store. There were at least 50 different kinds of cheese that we could sample. The many different types of sausage were very tasty including the buffalo sausage. Bought 3 different cheeses. I like the cheese w/horseradish and garlic cheese. We stopped for lunch at a quaint little cafĂ© and walked to the egg shop were there are all sizes of whole egg shells decorated. It was a great afternoon. When we came home Bill and Rhoda had bought a watermelon and gave us a chunk and served some as we sat out and talked.
Shipshewana was an Indian that befriended the settlers.
