Oct 2
It rained all night which was great for sleeping. We are staying Whitehall, NY the home of the insteption of the US Navy. The first Navy battleships were built here. Today was cool about 59 today as we took a ride to Vermont and visited 2 revolutionary war sites, Hubbardtown Vermont. It was the only battle in Vermont of the Revolutionary War. It was instrumental in delaying the British which aloud the American forces to regroup for the fight of Saratoga some weeks later. There were British, German and Canadian forces fighting at Hubbardtown. We then left for Mount Fort Independance it was the east side of Lake Champlain across from Fort Ticonderoga. The museum is shaped like a ships hull. To get to Ticonderoga we had to cross the lake on a ferry. Ticonderoga was built by the British in the mid 1700's. It was called Fort Carrillon during the French & Indian War. There were great artifacts including Washington's dueling pistols, a piece of Martha's wedding dress, and watch key presented to him by the US government. Beautiful powder horns, medical instruments, a lot of rifles one of which you were a loud to pick up, which I did. Boy was it heavy.
There was also a story about some men, can't remember names, who went up to the fort to get the cannons and drag over the snow and float them to Boston to help General Washington to use in the seige of Boston.
