Sept 26
Sept 26 = a day to rememberThe day started off great. We drove to a Revolutionary war site. There was a light drizzle but we read all the info on the site and hiked around the campground. Great hiking trails to stretch our sore muscles. We ate lunch and then headed for Pattie’s house. (Gene’s niece) That is when all every thing went down hill from there. We missed the turn to Smithfield so we decided to use the GPS to find another route since there was not enough room to turn around. The B…. told us to turn right on mountain rd. We did hesitate in doing this since it was a dirt road but put aside our feelings and started up the hill. After around 50 yards or so the B…. told us to turn around. The road was one lane. It was impossible to turn so we headed up. It started to rain. Just light rain. I could feel us slipping. We could not go forward and skidded backward. The truck was going one way and the trailer another. The front wheel went off the road but Gene was able to get it back and there we sat. Jack knifed on the side of a muddy mountain road. We were as close to going over the mountain as we could come with out actually going over. We called Gene’s ex sister in-law Louise and she got us a number for a towing company. This happened around 3:30. With many calls to our road service and local family we got help. It was now raining on and off. The tow company had to winch us up around a mile. There was a spot that they wanted us to drop the rv and another truck with 4wheel drive came with the proper hitch to pull the trailer. We had second thoughts but did as they said since they where the experts. We got to Pattie’s at 11am and found that they wrecked left side of the rv. The roof had a tear in it, the pipe for the generator was moved from its bracket, cover for the electric was broken off and the bottom side scrapped and pushed in. We could have gone over the hill so things could have been worse. Pictures follow.
