Wed. June 10

What a beautiful day. No more snow and fog only sunny and about 68. We found out that the tech that we are using is not a Dutchman dealer and since it is not life threatening it has been reported we will wait till we see a Dutchman authorized dealer in Anchorage.
Since it was sort of a down day I got the laundry done. Then we took a ride to Whitehorse and walked around at all the stores and bought some gifts. Marci has a birthday on June 15 and Jeff will be 40 on June 25. Doubt if the gifts get there in time.
We went for a walk along the Yukon river and saw eagles. Then we visited the SS Klondike One of the boats that use to transport people and supplies up to Dawson City. It was built 1929 and was the largest stern wheeler of the time. more than 50%larger. It was large enough to handle a cargo in excess of 300 ton without having to push a barge. It was a major breakthrough in stern wheeler design. It had a very shallow draft. Wood was a standard fuel for the boat and it could consume two cords of wood per hour. Wood stations were provided along the river in frequent spots. It is really a interesting story. They took up supplies like liqueur, beer, canned vegies , dry milk and egg for the miners in Dawson City. It brought back ore on its return trip.
We will be leaving tomorrow to head toward Tok Alaska. by way of Haines and Destruction Bay.
Everytime we use georgie, drink hot chocolate, look at the picture from that tells time, day and date I think of Brookhaven. The gifts were perfect. Even the flask I recieved from the Neimans has come in handy.The books were great enjoyed both of them. thanks again for a great sendoff. The seed money started what is a really great adventure.

June 10

Have a little problem with the 5th wheel. Gene noticed a tire was wearing unevenly so we came into a RV repair place. They have called the dealer and have not decided what the problems is. We know it should be covered by warranty, but... We are camping next to the dealer and he has given us full hook ups. So we will camp in the parking lots. Jim and Dixie are at a campground not far from us. I am writing this in the dealers showroom to get wifi. Snow has stopped but it is still cool. What is the weather like where you are?

Train ride to Skagway

We awoke to snow again this morning. They said that there had not be any snow in June Whitehorse since 1918. We don't mind it since I know how hot Texas is. I am so bundled up I can hardly bend my arms. I am sure you have noticed there are very few pics with me without a jacket on.The air is so clear and clean (when we are not driving on gravel roads and fog).
We took a bus from the train station in Whitehorse to Fraser to get the train. Since they put in new roads the train does not go from Whitehorse. We stopped in a little town called Carcross for a potty stop and a ride around the neighborhood. The building all sealed up was the old hotel that they are renovating for the 100 the anniversary. The Churches in the town were also 100 yrs. Then on to Fraser where we got on the train. The cars were old with a stove in the back and seats were hard, but a great ride. Learned more about the history of the gold rush and saw the places you hear about in the stories. The heartbreak hill where miners had to lung up tons of supplies. Many horses died along with men along that section. They said it smelled so bad from the rotting horses that if the wind was right you could smell the stench all the way into Stagway. Scenery was beautiful even with the fog, rain and snow. Some of the pics. have rain drops on them.

June 7 -9

We are in Whitehorse, Yukon. Camping in the woods. You get free firewood when you camp so we have had some great fires. I keep thinking of the radio show Sgt. Preston of the Yukon that I listen to as a kid and I am in the Yukon. It is snowing. The weather is cold in the mornings and cool in the days. We are at a wifi cafe and will go to the museums today and visit the old part of the city. Went to the Beringia museum. The museum had many ice age animals, snub nose bear, huge beaver, mammoth,etc. There were films that explained about the ice sheet that created Beringia thousands of years ago and how the people and animals crossed into Alaska. Great displays. Sorry we did not bring in the camera..We are going to Skagway on a narrow gage railroad Monday. Will have pics later.They need the table so I am signing off. Stay cool.

June 5 & 6

We drove to Teslin Yukon Territory and stayed 2 days staying at a free camp on the lake. Beautiful scenery. Every turn of the road is prettier. We ate at Mukluk Annie's and had baked salmon & ribs. Delicious...They also offered a boat ride at 8 on the lake. There are a lot of things we did not get pictures of are; fox, coyotes, birds, etc. Another difference in the country are golf courses in every town and hamlet. Found out because of the long summer daylight people can play golf, baseball, etc at midnight.
Visited the Tlingit cultural center (Clingit) and learned how the WHITE MAN screwed the natives of the Yukon. There are only 600 Clingit in Yukon. With the whit man came the diseases that killed most of them.
Also Visited George Johnson museum, a Cligit who brought the first car in 1928 Chevy when there were not roads in Teslin. But when the lake froze he could go 83 miles. A lot of history and artifacts which gave me a picture of the society.
